Customer stories

What solar looked like for two REST households.

Real figures from two recent REST contracts, starting with the electricity usage each contract assumes.

Solar panels on a home roof in Coventry: 23 panels, 10.925 kWp
Deepa SCoventry · February 2026

Case study

A 10.9 kWp roof for an estimated £2,700 yearly spend

The contract assumes Deepa's home uses about 10,000 kWh of electricity a year at a cost of around £2,700, so the roof needed to be as productive as the space allowed.

REST specified 23 panels (10.925 kWp) with a pair of Fox ESS EP12 batteries, 23.04 kWh of storage between them. Over the first year the contract estimates about 8,213 kWh generated, and around 46% of that is used in the home.

That adds up to an estimated £2,506 first-year benefit: roughly £1,013 from solar used directly, £847 from the batteries and £647 from exporting the rest. The estimated payback is about 10 years.

Solar panels on a home roof in Coventry: 18 panels, 8.55 kWp
Salim ACoventry · November 2025

Case study

A single battery and a big roof: an estimated £1,726 benefit

The contract estimates Salim's household uses about 6,486 kWh a year, costing around £1,742. That is moderate demand for a roof that had room for 18 panels.

REST paired the panels (8.55 kWp) with one Fox EP11 battery of 10.36 kWh. The contract estimates about 7,521 kWh generated in year one, with about 32% used at home and the surplus exported.

Because so much is exported, the largest slice of the estimated £1,726 benefit, about £738, comes from export income. Solar used directly adds around £560 and the battery around £428. Estimated payback is about 8 years.

These are selected examples, not typical results. All figures are estimates taken from each customer's REST UK contract at the time it was signed, not measured results. Older contracts use the government's SAP method and do not quote a payback. Actual generation and savings depend on the roof, shading, how electricity is used and future energy prices, and are not guaranteed.

Solar in Coventry

What to check before you fit solar in Coventry.

Three local points that can affect your plans, from planning rules to the network connection.

Conservation areas and listed buildings

Coventry has 18 conservation areas, and the council's planning map shows whether your home is in one. Listed buildings need separate consent. Elsewhere, solar on a house roof is often allowed without a planning application, subject to conditions.

Which network you are on

Coventry sits in the West Midlands area run by National Grid Electricity Distribution. REST handles the grid application for your system, but the operator sets the timetable, so we cannot promise a switch-on date.

Roofs, batteries and evening use

Coventry homes range from pre-war terraces to newer estates. Whether a battery pays back depends on how much of your electricity you use after dark, which is why your quote compares solar alone with solar plus storage.
