Daylight is free. The trouble is that a household's busiest hours often come after it has gone. Khandaker's Thurrock home was set to spend £1,750 a year on electricity, from 7,000 kWh.
Fourteen panels collect the daylight and a 10 kWh battery holds a share of it back for the evening. Half of the electricity the roof produces is projected to stay inside the house, so the system spends most of its energy where it matters.

Seven out of every ten units used at home: an Essex roof working for the household
Saulius's Essex home was set to spend £2,291 a year on electricity, £191 a month, from 8,500 kWh. A household that uses that much power does not need a roof built to sell it.
